One of the most important claims for oral hygiene products is teeth whitening, as Mintel’s consumer research shows many consumers are concerned about yellowing/stained teeth. In 2013, Mintel conducted an online discussion group in the UK in which participants were asked what influences their choices when buying oral healthcare products; removing plaque and yellow staining were the top influencers. Whitening toothpastes tend to be the most popular but whitening mouthwashes are also being launched globally.
Another trend is the increasing use of natural ingredients. Asia Pacific and Europe lead the trend for botanical/herbal toothpastes. Between January 2009 and October 2013, almost nine in ten toothpastes (87%) with botanical and herbal claims were launched in these regions. China is the country with the most botanical/herbal toothpaste launches as the sector draws on the popularity of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
