This report covers the UK retail market for chocolate confectionery, including any type of confectionery that has chocolate as its main ingredient.
The market has a number of segments, which are defined as follows:
Chocolate blocks: Solid blocks of chocolate, including milk, plain and white chocolate, of all sizes. Examples include Masterfoods Galaxy, Cadbury Dairy Milk and Nestlé Milky Bar. Also included are blocks with added ingredients, such as fruit and nuts, or additional flavourings, such as mint, where the format is a moulded block, such as Cadbury Dairy Milk Mintand Cadbury Dairy Milk Fruit & Nut.
Countlines: Products that contain chocolate as the main ingredient, as well as other ingredients such as caramel, fruit, wafer and biscuit. Examples include Mars bars, Snickers, Kit Kat, Twix and Crunchie.
Selflines: Bags, roll-wraps and tubes of all sizes, containing individual pieces of product, that are coated in chocolate – for example, Smarties, Maltesers, Revels and Munchies.
Limited editions: included in this report are extensions of regular brands that are available for a limited duration. This includes recipe or flavour changes, such as Nestlé Kit Kat Editions, promotional packages, such as 50% extra free, and novelty name deviations of established brands.
Kit Kat is included throughout the report; however, multipacks of two-finger Kit Kat are excluded as these are merchandised and marketed alongside CBCLs in the biscuit aisle. Kit Kat Chunky, limited editions and four-finger Kit Kat are included in the report.
Chocolate biscuit countlines (CBCLs), such as McVitie’s/Cadbury Chocolate Digestives, since chocolate is not the major ingredient, and they are marketed as a biscuit rather than confectionery.
All confectionery items based mainly on sugar or artificial sweeteners, such as toffees, jellies, chewing gum and mints (unless they are chocolate-coated), all other types of biscuits which are not CBCLs, and cereal bars, cakes and desserts of all types.
