Electrical Goods Retailing - UK - May 2011

"After a decade of underperformance the electricals sector should bottom out over the next two or three years, because there are some signs that the major retailers are beginning to develop formats which will allow them to fight back."

Product convergence is making a nonsense of some of the retail classifications. The ONS adopted a new system in 2010 based on the SIC 2007 (Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activities). It has done so in line with almost all European statistics offices. Unfortunately the changes are far too late and have come in time only to chart the terminal decline of some sectors. The specialist PC retailer is a classic example. The iPad demonstrates the problems – what is it? It is not a laptop, nor is it a mobile phone nor a camera, DVD player, radio, TV nor MP3 player. Yet it is a must-have item.
