Hot Dogs and Sausages - US - September 2014

“After experiencing minimal growth in 2012 and 2013, the hot dogs and sausages category is slated to grow 4.5% in 2014. Addressing consumer health concerns through more natural products, fresh presentations, and satisfying the need for variety through ethnic and innovative flavors has helped encourage consumers to purchase again. The hot dog and sausage category is projected to grow, but manufacturers must do more to address issues related to health, product quality, and freshness in order to enjoy more robust category sales. Consumers are also seeking a wider variety of flavors and ethnic offerings.”

This report answers the following questions:

  • Can parents learn to like hot dogs as much as their children do?
  • How to make sausages more attractive to consumers?
  • How do brands gain more appeal among Hispanics?
While sales of hot dogs and sausages are predicted to increase, there are some macro considerations, including a struggling US economy, concerns about childhood obesity, and population statistics that show a decline in the number of households with children.

Naturally, consumption of hot dogs and sausages is high in households with children, with 85% of households with one or more children saying they eat frankfurters or hot dogs; this drops to 77% in households without kids (see Market Drivers section).

Because the percentage of US households with kids has declined 2.5% between 2003 and 2013, there also has been a decrease in purchases of foods for children.

The 2013 US Census Bureau figures show the average number of children per family has dropped from 1.3 in 1970 to 0.9 in 2013, resulting in overall smaller families. A smaller pool of child consumers, coupled with parental concerns about the healthy properties of sausages, will continue to impact the category, specifically hot dog sales.
