Japan Outbound - August 2010

Expenditure on tourism has fallen in tandem with the decrease in tourists. Japan was once one of the leading countries in terms of tourism expenditure, but shorter-stay trips and a decline in the amount spent on shopping and local stay costs has pushed it into seventh place, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Business tourists are among the biggest spenders on outbound travel and this is an important market that all leading travel agencies service.

Preliminary figures for 2010 show that outbound travel is picking up. The expansion of new flights from Haneda Airport and a new agreement between the US and Japan should help liberalise the airline industry, increasing competition.
