Leisure Centres and Swimming Pools - UK - July 2011

Mintel’s research shows that lower admission prices are the biggest incentive likely to encourage non-users to start using leisure centres and swimming pools in the future, indicating that operators need to adopt a more flexible pricing structure in order to drive footfall.

"Councils will need to continue the strategy of rationalising the number of sites they operate, using proceeds from the sale of unwanted land and their ability to borrow at preferential rates to fund this. If anything, the rationale for such a move has grown stronger in the wake of public sector budget cuts, since a large, new modern, energy-efficient estate is going to be significantly cheaper to run in the long-term than an ageing, crumbling, inefficient one."
