“Although the UK lotteries market is dominated by the National Lottery, it is more diverse than share data would suggest. Players have a widening range of choices in games to play, and operators have plenty to think about in a sector in which interests and preferences vary significantly between the main player demographics.

The Health Lottery was a controversial new entrant to the market in 2011 but a High Court ruling has confirmed the legitimacy of its business model, and potentially paved the way for more outside brands to join in a similar way.

The newcomer’s ‘single cause’ focus is an interesting approach that taps in to many players’ interest in closer connections to the charities their ticket buying supports, although the extent to which it does so could become a thorny subject under the forthcoming government consultation on the sector beyond the National Lottery.”
