Specialty Foods - The NASFT State of the Industry Report - The Market - US - September 2011

This is the eighth NASFT/Mintel/SPINS State of the Industry Report, following the first report in May 2004, and is designed to show changes in the industry as a whole, and in the specific segments included here. As the State of the Industry Reports have evolved, so too has the quantity of available data, and as a result it is not always possible to compare findings across the published reports. When compatible data sources are available, NASFT/Mintel has drawn from the various reports (particularly the previous, most recent report), but in some instances, for example in the sections on market size and segmentation, wider data availability, as well as changes to category definitions, has made it necessary to restate multiple years of data, thereby making it impossible to compare segments or totals between reports.

According to the NASFT, specialty food products as used herein shall mean: foods, beverages or confections meant for human use that are of the highest grade, style and/or quality in their category. Their specialty nature derives from a combination of some or all of the following qualities: their uniqueness, exotic origin, particular processing, design, limited supply, unusual application or use, extraordinary packaging or channel of distribution/sale, the common denominator of which is their unusually high quality.

SPINS “Specialty Gourmet” and “Natural Standard” coding

In recent years, SPINS’ coding effort has been refined to separate specialty gourmet products across all channels. This refinement is based on brand positioning designations that are defined below:
