Travel and Tourism - Canada - May 2010

Canada’s tourism industry has become more subdued of late, as it reels from the aftershock of the global recession, and a strengthening Canadian Dollar has done little to lift the volume of international arrivals into the country. The number of arrivals to Canada has declined year on year since 2001. Its biggest source of visitors, the US, has dried up owing to its own deep-seated economic troubles. The situation worsened with the implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) in 2007, which enforces the use of passports for travel between Canada and the US. Growing competition from relatively inexpensive destinations has also drawn US visitors away.
