Travel and Tourism - France - February 2012

Looking at international tourist arrivals, the story of 2009 and 2010 is one of a partial recovery from the recession, followed by a flattening of the inbound market. France, however, has maintained its position as the most popular country in the world, heading the list of the UNWTO’s top ten destinations. In 2010, France attracted 76.8 million foreign tourists (the same number as in 2009), accounting for 16.1% of overall international tourist arrivals in Europe.

In the accommodation sector, a new, one- to five-star classification system, covering all types of properties – from self-catering flats to luxury hotels – is currently being phased in across the country. Years 2010 and 2011 saw several new (and renovated) hotel openings, notably in Paris. Île-de-France (which includes the capital) accounts for 25% of the total number of hotel rooms in France (150,473) but demand has kept up with supply. In 2010, the average occupancy rate in Paris was a healthy 77.2% – 3.6% higher than in 2009.
