Travel and Tourism - Greece - February 2012

Greece is a leading European tourist destination, attracting over 16.5 million visitors in 2011. The country is an important source of sun and sea tourism, with the bulk of tourists attracting large numbers of Europeans. A high proportion of visitors (50%) travel to the Greek mainland and its archipelago of islands at the height of the European summer– July through to September.

In recent years, however, Greece has received global media attention for reasons aside from tourism. The country has endured several years of recession, but unlike other European markets, has had to rely on financial assistance from other countries to enable its economy to function. In 2011 and 2012, the situation surrounding the Greek economy has proven, and continues to prove, problematic. Domestic tourism has waned, although the negative press does not appear to have significantly impacted inbound tourism.
