As the economy recovers, Lithuania’s tourism industry should have the opportunity to further develop its tourism products and widen its appeal among international tourists, beyond the main source markets in the Baltic States and Eastern Europe. Lithuania already has an excellent choice of modern tourist accommodation (there is currently an overcapacity of rooms) and new airlines have come in to fill the gap left by the demise of the national carriers.
Moreover, until the financial meltdown, Lithuania’s gross domestic product (GDP) was enjoying one of the healthiest growth rates in Europe – averaging 8% per annum between 2004-07. It may not return to those heady levels any time soon, but early data for 2011 indicate that Lithuania’s tourism industry is on the way back up.
