Travel and Tourism - New Zealand - May 2011

However, since 2005, New Zealand’s international arrivals have slowed considerably. Competition has heated up in the international tourism arena. The global economic crisis only undermined the situation in 2008 and 2009, the hardest years for international tourism globally. The H1N1 virus further limited travel in 2009, depressing arrivals from Asia and hindering any sort of recovery.

International arrivals were revived in 2010, growing 2.7%, but the impact of the recession was still felt in 2010, limiting trip duration and average expenditure. Travellers in main markets continue to feel the pinch in 2011, adopting cautious spending behaviour when overseas. It is a similar story for New Zealand’s domestic tourism market, where trips have been scaled back in recent years. New Zealanders do not typically spend more than three nights when taking trips at home, but a difficult economy and strong New Zealand Dollar has reduced domestic travel.
