Travel and Tourism - Singapore - February 2013

Despite the challenging global financial climate, Asia is a continent whose tourism industry is on the rise. The city state of Singapore is one of many destinations currently benefiting from an increase in the volume of intra-Asian travel (fuelled largely by higher tourist flows from China and India). According to United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) figures, South East Asia experienced 12.5% growth in arrivals in 2010 and 10.4% in 2011.

Singapore’s blossoming tourism industry is at the heart of this growth, with the number of international arrivals reaching record levels in both 2010 and 2011 (a trend that Mintel expects to be replicated in 2012 and 2013). This expansion has occurred despite the various challenges of recent years including the worldwide economic downturn and the H1N1 swine flu pandemic of 2009. The latter saw the country’s tourism fortunes dip for the first time since the 2003 SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) crisis.

Singapore’s tourism success has largely been powered by the 2010 opening of two iconic Integrated Resorts. These casino resorts are mega developments that have changed the face of Singapore’s skyline and brought the city state a raft of world-class hotels, upscale restaurants and leisure facilities.
