Latin American travel has been growing fast – at 8.1%, twice the global average of 4% in 2007 – rising in particular from US and Europe, with Brazil as the most visited country. Although Uruguay’s tourism still has some way to go to regain the 2.5 million arrivals it enjoyed a decade ago, 2008 saw an upswing in visitor numbers. The country posted 2 million tourists, the first time this kind of increase has been seen since 2001. Flying in the face of the global economic slowdown, this increase is due to the recovery of the Argentine market and a buoyant Brazilian market. Its cruise industry has more than doubled in the last three years and with good value property, the country is also receiving increased attention from foreign investors. Uruguayans living abroad are as important as the US market, in terms of foreign exchange.
