Tubes and Pipes (Industrial Report) - UK - June 2013

This report will give you fast, easy access to robust information from analysis and critical recommendations – so you can make the right decisions, at the right time. It will challenge routine thinking by providing you with fresh, new perspectives that energize your thought process.

There is no universally agreed definition differentiating pipes and tubes. Rather, the precise definition of what constitutes a pipe or tube varies according to the type of material and indeed application. In some sectors a tube is considered to be a foundry product, while in others tubes are considered to be of a smaller diameter than pipes. Typically, a standard definition of a tube consists of an outside diameter of less than 150 mm. However, the terms are largely interchangeable within most sectors of the market and consequently both tubes and pipes have been included in this report.

Tubes and pipes are characteristically cylindrical products used for the conveying of liquids. These can be either underground or above ground and may be flexible or rigid. Where applicable the coverage in this report also includes fittings that are either supplied with the tubes and pipes or supplied separately. While some materials allow tubes and pipes to be supplied in long sections, it is more common for pieces of pipe and tube to be joined to other sections to provide a pipe or tube system.

The following materials used in the production of tubes and pipes are quantified in this report:
  • Steel
  • Plastic
  • Copper
  • Ductile Iron
  • Clay
  • Aluminium
  • Concrete
  • Other metal
