Ever since the global recession, the colour cosmetics category could be relied on for significant growth in many developed markets when other beauty categories suffered. Some of the improving global economies are now experiencing slowing colour cosmetics growth.

For truly spectacular growth, it is still necessary to go to the developing nations, led by India and Indonesia, where growth in excess of 20% was reported in each of the last five years. Brazil and China, meanwhile, saw their colour categories grow 13% annually, but both are modest compared to their facial skincare markets. Brazil is hampered by its smaller population and reliance on direct sales.

The category is facing a further challenge. The influx of hybrid products such as BB and CC creams may be great news for the facial skincare category, but there is evidence that they are cannibalising sales of face make-up.
