The retail market only represents a fifth of the total market volume, which also includes milk sold to foodservice and supplies to the food/other manufacturing industries. In urban China, milk has reached high penetration. However, daily milk consumption is still low suggesting there is considerable space to grow the market through encouraging more frequent milk consumption.

In the US, Congress faced not only a fiscal cliff, but also a “dairy cliff”. It was able to pass a short-term solution that avoided a potential increase in dairy milk prices due to the expiration of government subsidies. India remains the largest milk market in the world and also the fastest growing market. The growth in India’s population and its rising affluence, particularly that of the middle class, is what the government of India anticipates will drive future demand for milk.
