The top five countries in 2014, based on sales in US$, are China, US, Brazil, Japan and the UK — rankings that have remained unchanged since 2013.

Growth in China slowed slightly between 2012 and 2013, but is still relatively high, driven by urbanisation and rising incomes. In the US retail market, much of the growth has been driven by the performance of national brands in the non-dairy/milk alternatives segment, which is far smaller but growing significantly faster than dairy milk in that country.

Globally, Asia represents some of the fastest-growing value markets. In Vietnam, consumption is very low, but the government, as well as leading dairy manufacturers, are working to increase consumption. India remains the largest milk producer in the world.

The growth in India’s population and its rising affluence, particularly that of the middle class, is what the government of India anticipates will drive future demand for milk. In the first 11 months of 2014, innovation in dairy drinks has been buoyant. The number of newly launched dairy drinks has increased globally compared with the same period last year, in line with overall food and drink innovation.
