When looking at consumption per capita (population), China shows some of the lowest levels among the 20 markets under review, with very good growth forecast.

Brazil is a country expected to see both high growth and high consumption within the overall pet food market.

Pet Food is a mature market in most developed countries, with particularly high consumption per capita in the US, Australia, France, Germany and the UK . It is interesting to note that Portugal, despite a lower total volume shows decent growth forecast and high consumption per capita.

Japan remained an innovative country in terms of NPD, but shows low levels of consumption and growth.

While different types of functional claims dominated the pet food categories overall, there was a clear focus on the more natural nutrition., although not necessarily all natural. In the past year, close to a third of all Pet Food activity was in the Dog Snacks & Treats sub-category, with a further fifth in the Dry Dog Food sub-category.

Chicken, as single protein and in flavour blends, was the most used flavour of 2014 in both cat and dog segments.
