This global annual market overview will provide you with an in-depth review of the key issues in the global sweet and savoury spreads market through 2014 as well as our forecast for what will happen in 2015 and beyond.

2014 has been a strong year for both the sweet and savoury spreads markets. For sweet spreads, global retail sales were boosted in no small part by a resurgent nut spread market in the US.

Though most sweet spreads markets show year-on-year value growth, the fastest growing regions are largely found in Asia, with the Vietnamese, South Korean, Chinese and Indonesian markets all set for double-digit growth in 2014.

Savoury spreads markets have also had a strong year. In the US, dip sales are forecast to have grown by 3%, with Greek yogurt and hummus-inspired dips growing strongly.

Another pointer to the health of the category globally is that innovation rates are growing in most regions. Two of the main challenges impacting both categories are around health and format issues.

For sweet spreads, sugar and its possible replacements dominate the health agenda. In savoury spreads, concerns are more focussed around naturalness and added health benefits such as high fibre or protein claims.

The onset and growth of breakfast biscuits and other on the go breakfast items means this is an increasingly competitive segment.
