Unemployment stood at 8.6% in January 2011 (latest), having fluctuated between 8.4% and 8.7% in 2010.

Eurostat recorded a steady decrease in consumer confidence after mid-2010, continuing into January 2011 to stand at -25.9 before a slight recovery to -23.9 in February 2011 (latest).

Total consumer spending fell by 2.0% in 2009 but rose by 2.0% in 2010.

Household appliances saw spending dive by 10% in 2009 but consumer electronics fared much better with sales broadly level on 2008’s figures.
