Covered in this report
This report looks at streaming of free or paid-for video and music using online services or mobile apps. Download-only services are not included within the scope of this Report, however, some streaming services offer the facility to save or purchase files on an individual basis, for either online or offline play. The market value for the music streaming industry is based on subscription revenues that typically give a user unlimited online access to an extensive range of tracks, which can normally be accessed on a range of connected devices (eg smartphones, tablets and laptops). Any revenues gained from advertising are not included in the market size.
The market value for the video streaming industry is based on subscription numbers only and does not include one-off transactions made to either rent or download TV programmes or films, though these additional revenues are referred to within the analysis where relevant. Value data has not been included. Ofcom (Office for Communications) and ComReg (Commission for Communications Regulation) do not provide sales data. This report examines TV streaming viewing habits and attitudes of consumers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This refers to the consumption of video content accessed through the following sources (unless stated otherwise):
- Video-on-demand (VoD) platforms that exist alongside a broadcaster’s/provider’s linear TV service in order to provide access to time-shifted content via the internet (eg BBC iPlayer, Sky Go etc).
- Subscription video-on-demand (SVoD) services that require a monthly payment (eg Netflix, Now TV).
- Other forms of online video service such as those that allow viewers to purchase individual shows (eg TalkTalk TV Store), or access TV programmes or clips on video streaming sites (eg YouTube) that are funded by advertising.
- Live TV, DVD/Blu-Ray and other more traditional forms of media are examined within this Report, but as competitors to streaming services.
What you need to know
Usage of streaming media in Ireland is high, with 44% of NI and 39% of RoI consumers having access to a paid streaming service in 2018, and increasing levels of preference for streaming as a method of accessing content. Moving forward, traditional live TV services are likely to see their viewership levels increasingly impacted by streaming services, as consumers show a growing preference for time-shift programming, and a high regard for original content from streaming services.
