Italian e-commerce remains at an early stage of development – we estimate that online sales represented just 2.5% of all retailers’ sales in 2017. Several factors have held things back for the country as a whole: poor infrastructure, low broadband penetration, low usage of credit cards, no heritage of mail order shopping and the North-South economic divide. However, once online, Italians are keen online shoppers - our online-based consumer research showed that 93% of Italian respondents had bought online over the last year, with clothing and footwear the most popular category. Italians have one the highest levels of ownership of mobile phones, meaning that a mobile-enabled app and website are pre-requisites for operating in the country.Amazon dominates, with an estimated market share of 12%. The provision from local retailers is poor and the sector has a distinctly international flavour. The largest Italian pureplayers are electricals specialist, ePrice, and luxury goods group, YNAP.
