Germany Extended Reality Market Report 2025

"Prioritise wellness, quick trial and peer validation to unlock mainstream XR appeal."

Jan Urbanek, Principal Analyst

German XR Industry – Trends and Insights

Germany’s extended reality (XR) market remains niche, but is quietly building momentum. Only 24% of Germans used any XR technology in the past year, yet AR apps already reach 19% of all adults – a figure that outpaces the penetration of smart speakers at a comparable adoption stage. Such early traction highlights AR’s mainstream accessibility via smartphones, and signals untapped potential despite prevailing German caution toward emerging technologies.

Shifting market dynamics are poised to accelerate adoption. Competition among leading vendors such as Samsung, Meta and Valve, paired with rapid advances in AI-driven content creation, is both lowering the entry cost and enhancing device quality. The market is at an inflection point that could unlock adoption, provided brands can convert growing interest into first-hand experience.

The greatest opportunity lies in activating the enthusiasm of 16-34s through hands-on product trial and wellness or gaming use cases. Significant headwinds remain, however: Germans’ uncertainty avoidance creates high hurdles, with 45% undecided on XR’s usefulness and 61% demanding strict regulation. Success in this market will hinge not only on technological advances, but also on building trust and demystifying XR so hesitant consumers feel secure making the leap.

This Report Looks at the Following Areas:

  • How economic pressure and price sensitivity are shaping German consumers’ willingness to invest in XR devices
  • The extent and impact of the exposure gap – why many remain undecided about XR, and what drives curiosity vs hesitation
  • Generational differences in attitudes towards XR
  • The role of trust, transparency and regulatory compliance in influencing adoption and market growth
  • The influence of retail dynamics – how online shopping trends, pop-up trial and influencer endorsements affect trial and purchase
  • The emergence of wellness as a key use case, expanding XR’s relevance beyond entertainment
  • Consumer perceptions of XR as an enhancer of real life, and reactions to ‘metaverse’ narratives

What goes into a Mintel Market Intelligence Report?

Curious about how a Market Intelligence report comes together? We like to think of it as building a detailed puzzle. We start with individual pieces: data from consumers, market statistics, industry trends, and online conversations. Then our expert analysts add world-class human insight and industry knowledge. The pieces are assembled to reveal a clear, comprehensive picture of a market.

The Four Pillars of Our Research

We use a combination of four main research methods when creating our reports, each adding a valuable perspective:

  • Consumer Research: Direct surveys with real people, giving us clear, current insights into what people think and do.
  • Desk Research: In-depth review of trusted data sources. We use this rich database, plus powerful internal tools that track new products and market sizes, to detect trends and guide forecasts.
  • Trade Research: Insights from conversations with industry experts. Their real-world experience helps us understand what’s happening behind the scenes.
  • Brand and Social Media Research: Analysis of online opinions and trends. This lets us spot trends, measure brand sentiment, and capture feedback in real time, adding further depth to our research.

Bringing It All Together

Each of these four pillars provides a different piece of the puzzle. Consumer research tells us what customers think, desk research provides the factual framework, trade research offers an insider’s view, and social media analysis reveals public sentiment.

Our expert analysts are skilled in weaving these diverse data streams together. They apply a range of quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques to uncover the deeper story, connecting the dots to deliver clear, actionable insights. This comprehensive, multi-layered process is how we transform raw data into a market intelligence report you can trust to inform your most important business decisions.

When carrying out background research, I find Mintel an excellent starting point.
