Download Report Summary

Despite rising interest in hydration and exercise, sports drinks are struggling to convert demand into growth. Competition is intensifying as water, carbonated soft drinks (CSDs) and other beverages add functional benefits, while the popularity of dilutables is reshaping the category and reducing volumes.

Notably, 66% of sports drink consumers drink them outside exercise occasions, making everyday hydration a larger usage context than sport itself. Work, study and gaming occasions can broaden relevance beyond performance, while mental wellbeing creates opportunities to link hydration with focus and productivity.

At the same time, sports drinks remain underdeveloped both within sport contexts and among key consumer groups. Consumption frequency still trails exercise participation, highlighting whitespace around recovery and targeted nutrition such as clear protein. Usage remains skewed towards younger consumers and men, leaving women and older adults underserved.

This Report Looks at the Following Areas:

  • Market drivers for sports drinks, exploring economic pressures, regulatory changes and demand for functionality
  • Market size and forecast, highlighting slowing volume growth as category blurring and functionality in drinks increase
  • Usage and usage frequency of sports drinks, revealing a disconnect with exercise participation
  • Occasions, with consumption beyond exercise offering broader growth potential alongside a deeper look at exercise usage
  • Reasons for sports drink consumption, highlighting recovery as a key opportunity
  • Attitudes and behaviours towards sports drinks, pointing to a need for greater hydration literacy to justify use
  • Usage and interest in functional health ingredients, with interest partially exceeding usage and pointing to adoption barriers

Mintel is really good for getting a handle on a particular category quickly. If we are working on a new business pitch in an area we don’t have much experience in, it’s a brilliant way to get up to speed with what’s going on, what’s changing and what the key trends are in any category.

It’s very rare now that anyone will plough through a 200-page report – that’s why the summaries are really useful. We know they are backed up by a lot of detail, so if you need to go into something in more depth you know the information will be all there for you.
