Download Report Summary

Traditional sweet spreads, especially jam, are losing relevance as habitual sweetness comes under pressure. 61% of sweet spread users are concerned about the amount of sugar in them. At the same time, consumers still allow space for selective indulgence, sustaining chocolate spreads, but favouring nut spreads that feel more ingredient-led and filling rather than purely indulgent. The result is a narrowing sweet spread repertoire, with growth concentrating in fewer, more defensible formats.

On the savoury side, adoption is moving faster than innovation. Cooking-led usage is rising as more Germans cook at home for health reasons, yet savoury spread launches have pulled back between 2023 and 2025. This disconnect creates clear opportunity for brands to reposition savoury spreads as ingredients and meal solutions, rather than just toppings.

The biggest opportunity lies in re-anchoring spreads to modern daily routines – cooking, breakfast and light snacking – through credible sugar moderation, ingredient density and clearer usage inspiration. The key threat is failing to adapt: products that remain positioned around habit alone risk being squeezed by both health scrutiny and private label value competition.

This Report Looks at the Following Areas:

  • Sweet spreads’ value growth is increasingly driven by pricing rather than stronger consumption, leaving brands exposed in a cost-pressured, health-scrutinised environment
  • Sugar concerns, blood sugar awareness and UPF anxiety are narrowing everyday sweet spread repertoires, while favouring nut-based and savoury formats that feel more justifiable
  • Cooking-led usage of savoury spreads is growing, but NPD has pulled back, creating a mismatch between behaviour and product development
  • Nut spreads balance indulgence with credibility, using organic and ethical cues, and resonate beyond younger cohorts, positioning them as long-term drivers

One of the biggest challenges we face is the need to get smart on a business or category real quick.

We are talking to clients who live and breathe their category every day and the expectation is that we will be able to get caught up very quickly, and bring the thinking that can help them.

We need to do that often in a matter of days, so it’s not a small ask. Mintel gives us a very articulate view of category conditions and does so at the speed we need it.

When carrying out background research, I find Mintel an excellent starting point.

The fact that it covers so many markets is a big plus for me– instead of having to buy specialist products in each area we are interested in, especially when we only require a brief view on a particular market, we can go to Mintel for help as a one-stop shop.
