Consumption of tea and hot chocolate is near universal in Germany. Tea is drunk by 91% of Germans at home/in the workplace, and hot chocolate by 71%. This ubiquitous nature puts the pressure on brands to increase volume sales, with 2024 seeing a 1% volume decline in tea sales, for example.
Inflation has impacted both categories with prices of tea and cocoa powder some 17.6% and 42.3% higher, respectively, in July 2024 than in 2020. Tea retail sales reached €1.59bn in 2024 and hot chocolate sales reached a little over €273m as prices continued to increase. Maintaining high usage frequency in this environment is a challenge for brands.
Climate change remains a disruptor for both industries, as significant supply challenges impact established tea-growing regions – yet the opportunity for localism in lesser developed cultivation areas continues to appear. Climate challenges and price fluctuations also impact the cocoa sector.
Health is a highly important avenue for both tea and hot chocolate NPD. To remain future-proof, advocation for health and sustainability will appeal to conscious consumers.
This report looks at the following areas:
- Market context and drivers for tea and hot chocolate, including the impact of the economy, the environment and personal health concerns
- Frequency of consumption, drinking occasions, and interest in innovations in tea and hot chocolate
- Attitudes and behaviours related to tea and hot chocolate, including interest in hot chocolate from a favourite brand, and healthy ingredients and unique hot chocolate flavours captivating consumer interest
- New product development trends, market shares, market size, segmentation and forecast
Focusing on functional health and unique flavours would bode well for both categories. Hot chocolate launches from well-established chocolate brands has huge appeal.

What goes into a Mintel Market Intelligence Report?
Curious about how a Market Intelligence report comes together? We like to think of it as building a detailed puzzle. We start with individual pieces: data from consumers, market statistics, industry trends, and online conversations. Then our expert analysts add world-class human insight and industry knowledge. The pieces are assembled to reveal a clear, comprehensive picture of a market.
The Four Pillars of Our Research
We use a combination of four main research methods when creating our reports, each adding a valuable perspective:
- Consumer Research: Direct surveys with real people, giving us clear, current insights into what people think and do.
- Desk Research: In-depth review of trusted data sources. We use this rich database, plus powerful internal tools that track new products and market sizes, to detect trends and guide forecasts.
- Trade Research: Insights from conversations with industry experts. Their real-world experience helps us understand what’s happening behind the scenes.
- Brand and Social Media Research: Analysis of online opinions and trends. This lets us spot trends, measure brand sentiment, and capture feedback in real time, adding further depth to our research.
Bringing It All Together
Each of these four pillars provides a different piece of the puzzle. Consumer research tells us what customers think, desk research provides the factual framework, trade research offers an insider’s view, and social media analysis reveals public sentiment.
Our expert analysts are skilled in weaving these diverse data streams together. They apply a range of quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques to uncover the deeper story, connecting the dots to deliver clear, actionable insights. This comprehensive, multi-layered process is how we transform raw data into a market intelligence report you can trust to inform your most important business decisions.
