Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the lockdowns and tightened social distancing measures in late 2020 and into the first half of 2021 hampered the recover of consumer spending. However, while 2021 spending is still 6.7% short of pre-COVID levels, this overall figure masks considerable differences between categories. While in-home categories such as food and drink and household care have benefitted from the increased time spent at home, the leisure, hospitality and travel sectors have continued to struggle.

The economic impact of the pandemic could lead to continued worry for consumers over their finances, as well as fewer opportunities for retail and leisure activities. While online retailing and ecommerce has seen a boost throughout the pandemic, many consumers are still interested in in-store shopping opportunities to both diversify their spending and get out of the house. To help appeal to consumers, brands will need to focus more of their messaging and product innovations on the connection with family members and mental and emotional wellbeing.

The seemingly ever-growing focus on sustainability and social equality continues to present opportunities for businesses and brands to engage with consumers about how they are approaching these important issues. However, the market is becoming a more competitive battleground and offering brands less and less standout. Brands that set more ambitious objectives and are transparent in their journey to meeting these targets will garner greater consumer trust and engagement.

The successful vaccination rollout across the spring of 2021 and into the summer has supported an almost total relaxation of social distancing measures in the UK. Spending has consequently boomed in a number of categories across the second half of 2021, with pent-up demand for leisure and travel helping to restore spending in these categories. However, this will not be enough to repair the damage done in the first half of the year, with total consumer spending still short of pre-pandemic levels. Total spending is expected to recover in 2022, but again this will not be felt evenly by all sectors, and rising inflation will put pressure on some consumers’ incomes.
