The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the UK kitchens and kitchen furniture market, with extended periods inside opening new opportunities for kitchen owners. However, in contrast the many other areas of non-essential spending, the pandemic has not been characterised by a drawn-out decline, but rather a short and sharp impact followed by a quick recovery.

While the domestic kitchen furniture market saw a drop of 3.3% in 2020, it was surpassed by 4.3% growth in 2021. 41% of kitchen owners report valuing their kitchen more than before the outbreak, with 29% having boosted their spending and 34% having rethought the layout of these rooms.

The longer-lasting implications of the pandemic is the net long-term benefit for ecommerce channels. 57% of those consumers that intend on spending more money on their kitchen in the next two years would be interested in purchasing a kitchen without having to visit a store. Retailers must respond to this change in their consumer base, both re-encouraging footfall via in-store experiences, but also catering to this new online demand for kitchen furniture.

While the market has seen a shift towards online channels, spending intentions appears to be unaltered and are even fed by the prospect of further uncertainty. Recent record activity in the housing market could open up new demand into the next decade for the kitchen furniture industry, even with the possibility of more restrictions.
