Download Report Summary

Only 18% of consumers feel ‘very’ financially prepared for retirement. Even where confidence exists it tends to be shallow, showing scope to increase consideration of, and engagement in, the market for later life planning.

The need to make provision for the future is sharpened by a ‘stable but fragile’ economic backdrop: while older consumers begin 2026 from relative stability, inflation is uncertain and growth remains weak, eroding the real value of savings for fixed-income retirees and intensifying the need for income certainty.

From April 2027, unused defined-contribution pension funds and most death benefits fall within the inheritance tax estate, already driving increased gifting, earlier drawdown and renewed interest in annuities, giving providers a legitimate, urgent reason to re-engage older customers.

Alongside economic pressure, procrastination and emotional friction are major threats to future financial security, with 55% feeling anxious about ageing and 58% agreeing that planning for later life can make them feel overwhelmed. The result is an abundance of intention but a scarcity of completed action. Consumers are willing to think about later life, discuss it and even seek advice, but engagement falls when an action requires them to formalise decisions, relinquish control or confront financial reality.

This Report Looks at the Following Areas:

  • How as inflation continues to erode purchasing power and retirees face growing pressure on fixed incomes, delivering income certainty is becoming increasingly important
  • How an ageing population is making later life planning an increasingly mainstream aspect of financial planning
  • How major regulatory change, including the Advice/Guidance boundary shift, the Pension Schemes Bill and the 2027 inclusion of pensions in inheritance tax, is redrawing the competitive landscape
  • How independence matters more than passing on wealth in later life, with consumers prioritising autonomy over legacy
  • How providers are converging on structured, guided retirement journeys that bundle annuities, drawdown and legacy planning into single, integrated propositions designed to reduce complexity and increase customer confidence

We’ve found it so useful working more closely with Mintel. They helped support our recent flagship event for our top suppliers by providing a really unique viewpoint on the future of online retailing.

Nick Carroll from their Retail Team was also an excellent panelist, sharing useful and actionable consumer insights. We definitely look forward to working with Mintel again on future projects.

Mintel is really good for getting a handle on a particular category quickly. If we are working on a new business pitch in an area we don’t have much experience in, it’s a brilliant way to get up to speed with what’s going on, what’s changing and what the key trends are in any category.

It’s very rare now that anyone will plough through a 200-page report – that’s why the summaries are really useful. We know they are backed up by a lot of detail, so if you need to go into something in more depth you know the information will be all there for you.

When I’m investigating specific sectors I tend to use Mintel reports for their forecasting, which I’ve always found to be very accurate.

They also offer really broad and deep coverage in their reports. They are very, very detailed. For example, we were able to gain insight across a wide range of business areas from just one report, proving that Mintel is excellent value for money.

So overall, it’s the level of detail and the quality of forecasting that really stand out for me.
