Download Report Summary

Social commerce continues to thrive, with 90% of social media buyers purchasing a product through social platforms. The most defining shift in this space, however, has been TikTok’s rise to overtake Facebook as the go-to platform for social shopping. Fuelled by entertainment-driven discovery, frictionless in-feed purchasing, and a powerful recommendation algorithm, TikTok is forcing every major platform to strengthen its commerce ecosystem and close the gap between discovery and checkout.

A key opportunity in social commerce is to leverage in-app chatbots. Nearly half (47%) of social media buyers have used one when making a purchase, showing that more of the buying journey is happening on these platforms. Shoppers are also changing how they search, moving away from keywords toward describing goals and problems they want solved. This raises the bar for in-app chatbots, which must now tackle specific shopping missions, rather than simply surfacing product information. Here, AI-powered chatbots can help shoppers find products faster, shorten the path from discovery to purchase, and meet consumers where they already spend their time.

However, as social feeds become more saturated with AI content, verification, transparency and human-centred experiences are becoming essential. This means trust on social platforms is emerging as the defining battleground of social commerce.

This Report Looks at the Following Areas:

  • Changes in social media usage and buying in the last year
  • How social media is evolving from a discovery platform into a search destination
  • How changing search and discovery habits are reshaping the path to purchase
  • How in-app chatbots are accelerating the shift towards conversational commerce
  • Why verification and trust signals will become increasingly important in driving purchase confidence
  • How social media bans and platform uncertainty are exposing the risks of platform-dependent commerce

Mintel helps us when we want to know something quickly – it provides fast answers to our questions. If we need to get a view of what’s going on in a particular market it’s very useful.

When carrying out background research, I find Mintel an excellent starting point.

The fact that it covers so many markets is a big plus for me– instead of having to buy specialist products in each area we are interested in, especially when we only require a brief view on a particular market, we can go to Mintel for help as a one-stop shop. I find Mintel a useful and valuable resource.

One of the biggest challenges we face is the need to get smart on a business or category real quick.

We are talking to clients who live and breathe their category every day and the expectation is that we will be able to get caught up very quickly, and bring the thinking that can help them.

We need to do that often in a matter of days, so it’s not a small ask. Mintel gives us a very articulate view of category conditions and does so at the speed we need it.
