Below, we’ve handpicked the key insights analysed in the full report and summarised the core topics.
Despite the high profile competition in the alcoholic beverage market and the expected impact of inflation on non-essentials, or perhaps partially because of it, the beer category held its own in 2023.
Beer remains the most consumed alcoholic beverage, with a quarter of alcoholic beverage consumers choosing beer as their primary option. However, the growth of the beer market has been overshadowed by both spirits and RTDs. Alcohol moderation is a key consumer trend affecting the market, and as drinkers moderate, they seek fewer but better beverages and those that deliver on unique flavour experiences and this could threaten beer’s overall influence going forward.
Over half of US beer drinkers say that flavour is the top factor when it comes to beer selection, and a fifth agree that more flavoured options would lead to increased engagement. Highlighting that beer brands need to focus on flavour experimentation. However, not just through product innovation, but inspiring new tastes can come from DIY tips like beer-based cocktails, garnishes, and more.
While beer is still the king of casual occasions, there is room to expand in both directions. To sustain share of occasions, brands will need to guide consumer choices, linking beer to both daily and special occasions like brunch or tastings with ways to customise the experience and the flavours.
