Chile, sometimes called the Switzerland of South America because of its stable economy and natural beauty, is considered a safe and secure destination. While other countries in the region have unstable economies, volatile currencies, corruption and safety issues, Chile has gone through impressive growth over the last decade. The country suffered from oppressive military dictatorship from 1973 until 1990 but is now a flourishing multi-party democracy. The country has the highest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in Latin America and the government’s conservative policies have been supportive of investors.
