Travel and Tourism - Nigeria - May 2013

With a population of over 170 million and an economy that has the potential to reap considerable rewards from its oil resources, Nigeria could be one of the most intriguing, captivating and attractive countries in Africa. With a vast and varied interior, an interesting coastline, and a unique and colourful culture, tourism has many opportunities to flourish here.

However, due to a number of setbacks and problems, most significantly corruption and regional conflict, the country has so far not developed into a destination that has much appeal to the leisure tourist. The oil sector has ensured that business tourism has remained strong, and hotel and other accommodation prices in the major cities remain high. This means that for many of these businesses, they can operate on an extremely profitable basis.
