The underlying results are OK, with profits marginally down. The loss comes as a result of
exceptional items. The main ones are a further provision against PPI claims and the costs of closing
down the stores. N Brown faces a period of uncertainty after the surprise departure of the CEO in
September. It's not clear why she had to go, though the store expansion and failure to establish a
strong online growth pattern seem to have been contributing factors. But in online terms, N Brown
is a mature business. It has some great businesses such as the core JD Williams and the younger
brands Simply Be and Jacamo which have been the focus for recent investment. But none of these
would be capable of the explosive growth reported by online start-ups recently and last year the
group only managed sales growth of 1.8%, excluding the impact of store closures. N Brown is a
solid business which has made the transition to online, but now has to cope with a period under an
interim CEO before a new one is found.
